The Henrich House
Closing Reception (5-7 PM): 24 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills
Description by Conor Libit
Name: Richard Henrich house
Address: 24 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills
6 Bedrooms, 3.5 Bathrooms
Architect: Edward Dart
Built: 1962
Completed in the early 1960s, the home is a masterful blend of modernist principles and natural integration, showcasing Edward Dart’s innovative approach to design. The house features a sleek, minimalist exterior with clean lines and large expanses of glass that seamlessly connect the interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. The home sits like a medieval castle, topping a wooded hill squeezed between two lakes, unlike many other mid century homes with their low sprawling floor plans the tall sheer brick walls reinforce that castle typology. The use of natural materials such as stone and wood not only complements the home's modern aesthetic but also enhances its harmony with the wooded setting. In this home you can see the progression in architectural styles from modernism to brutalist and postmodernism
The interior of the house has a series of spaces that flow seamlessly between one another, and like the exterior, verticality and horizontality are stressed. For example, the stairway to the upper levels is open and leads to catwalks that are also open to the space below. The house has an open-plan layout and emphasis on functional beauty. The interior spaces are designed to maximize light and views, with floor-to-ceiling windows that invite the outdoors in and create a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior environments.
