Don Tosi House
Route 1, Stop 2
Description by Conor Libit
Address: 212 Kimberly Road, North Barrington
Architect: Don Tosi
3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms
Built: 1949
The home at 212 Kimberly Road was built and designed by Donald Tosi with help from Bruce Goff in 1949 for the Meyer family in a rural setting in North Barrington with amazing views of Honey Lake and located in a setting rich with wildlife. The home was purchased by the Johnson family in 1958 and was loved and cared for until current owners purchased it in 2021. The current owners have been restoring the home to keep it as close to original as possible and bring the home back to its glory. All of the home's owners have had a love affair with modernism and thanks to the Johnson family has survived the tribulations of time and nature. In 1967 the home was demolished by an F4 tornado that devastated the area and the home was almost leveled to the ground. The Johnsons had so much love for the home and property that they contracted Donald Tosi a second time to rebuild the home. The Johnsons persevered through the displacement and cleanup project to give the home new life - truly "a home so nice it was built twice". Facing east/west the home takes full advantage of amazing sunrises and sunsets. 212 Kimberly Rd is truly a magical place sharing the home and property with nature itself.

25-year-old Don Tosi, a protege of architect Bruce Goff, designed this home at the same time he was working on Goff’s iconic Ford House in Aurora. Because he was so young and not licensed as an architect, Tosi’s design was signed by Goff himself.
